Aug 6, 2019 Do you hear an engine knocking sound when you hit the gas? It could be due to pre-ignition or detonation. Here's what you can do about it.

“Pre-ignition” is another abnormal combustion event that is often confused with detonation, but in fact is completely different. Pre-ignition is the ignition of the air-fuel charge prior to the spark plug firing. Anytime something causes the mixture in the chamber to ignite before the spark plugs fire, it is classified as pre-ignition. The net result is detonation. Pre-ignition is a completely different set of circumstances. You might be able to figure out the cause of this by its label. As we all know, the combustion process doesn’t start until the spark jumps across the electrode gap.

Those failures are insidious in nature because the root causes of those failures are often hard to recognize. This discussion is intended only as a primer about these abnormal combustion processes since whole books have been devoted to the subject. Knocking should not be confused with pre-ignition—they are two separate events. However, pre-ignition can be followed by knocking.

Internal Combustion vs. Detonation in Aircraft Piston Engines Normal activity in the internal combustion engine entails a progressive burning of the fuel-air mixture within the cylinders. The gasses within the cylinders are ignited from the top.

The octane rating of a given grade of gasoline is a measure of its … As nouns the difference between detonation and preignition is that detonation is an explosion or sudden report made by the near-instantaneous decomposition or combustion of unstable substances as, the detonation of gun cotton specifically, combustion that spreads supersonically via shock compression while preignition is (automotive) the premature detonation of a fuel charge in. Detonation is an explosion at the end gasses, after combustion has begun. With detonation, the spark ignites the fuel/air mixture, as it should. Detonation occurs after ignition and causes an explosion of the mixture, rather than a smooth burn. Detonation is different, but … Engine Detonation and Preignition.

Detonation is a problem caused by colliding flame fronts in an internal combustion engine. The spark plug creates only one of them, and the other is undesired. When the air/fuel charge ignites out of time and elsewhere in the chamber, a separate and undesired flame front ignites after the spark plug fires.

Detonation is the precursor to preignition and only J&S Electronics can provide you a real-time solution to your ignition timing that both maximizes performance and protects your investment. Preignition and detonation are two separate and distinct events. Detonation is an explosion at the end gasses, after combustion has begun. With detonation, the spark ignites the fuel/air mixture, as it should. Detonation occurs after ignition and causes an explosion of the mixture, rather than a smooth burn. Detonation is different, but creates the same problems as pre-ignition.

Tech. Share: There are many ways to ruin a perfectly good engine, but today, I just want to talk about two of the most violent ones. Detonation and Pre-Ignition, often interchanged and/or used to describe the same thing, are actually quite different things that lead to similar outcomes. They are both referred to as Mar 05, 2018 “Pre-ignition” is another abnormal combustion event that is often confused with detonation, but in fact is completely different. Without a high pressure spike to resonate the chamber and block, you would never hear pre-ignition.

This is done by reducing power, enriching the mixture and opening the engine cowl flaps. The best way to avoid pre-ignition is to ensure that the cooling system is correctly controlled, to use spark plugs with the right heat spectrum for the device and to configure Detonation definition, the act of detonating. See more. The pressure from pre-ignition is not rapid like it is with detonation. Instead, the pressure is very high and has a much longer duration. Damage: Damage from pre-ignition is much more severe and instantaneous than that from detonation.

Detonation — generally caused by fuel with a low octane rating — is the tendency for the fuel to pre-ignite or auto-ignite in an engine's combustion chamber.

The first half of the article explains detonation and the second half explains pre-ignition. Detonation of fuel before Ignition or (Pre-Ignition due to Detonation).
